10th MayI get a lot of questions on my meditation practices and how one should get started. There is no science to meditating, at least for me. I simply sit quietly and alone with myself for as long as I need to. I also count my meditation/prayer beads if I am feeling unbalanced or anxious. I try to meditate when no one is around or in my house so I can reap the full benefits of my practice. Also, if you’re into practicing Yoga, a studio is a great place to delve into meditation while exercising the mind and body, if you are willing to share the experience with your fellow yogis.
Below you can find my 10 tips on how to get started with your meditation practice. I hope this helps and answers any questions you may have.
1. Sit alone with your thoughts.
Turn off your phone and music. Embrace your truth in silence.
2. Sit cross legged against a wall with your eyes closed.
This helps me open up my chest so that my heart can receive the energy around me.
3. Address your fears, dreams, hopes, sadness… whatever you are going through.
Do not hold back from yourself. It’s OK to address the things on your mind. No one is around to judge you.
4. Practice breathing at steady and calm pace.
When I first started meditating I would catch myself holding my breath when I would go to think of something that may have been making me anxious. Try not to do that, it will distract and take away from the purpose of the practice.
5. Light a candle or two if it’s dark and your choosing to meditate before bed.
This always calms me down and allows me to leave any hardships of the day behind and/or give thanks to the universe for allowing me to journey throughout the day.
6. Meditate as long as you please.
Don’t rush yourself. Give yourself enough time to be alone.
7. Counting beads.
I like to count my beads and pray on them. You don’t have to do this, it’s just my preference.
I find that counting my beads relives stress.
8.Enjoy your time.
Really embrace your alone time. Do not keep “watch” on a clock. You will know when you’re ready to end the meditation session.
9. Make sure your mind is quiet.
It’s easy to allow our thoughts to get us excited or anxious. Address the issues or feelings in a relaxed manor. This helps me keep focus and realistic.
10. Don’t limit your meditation.
Be alone as often as you need. There is not right or wrong, time or place to take a moment or two for yourself.
Namaste!
A.
